What is NDA & NA (I) and (II) Exam –

The NDA exam is conducted by UPSC for admission to the Army, Navy and Air Force wings of the NDA. This exam is a gateway for candidates looking forward to joining Defence Forces including Army, Navy and Air Force. This is a national level exam conducted twice a year: NDA I and NDA II to help candidates make a career in Defence services. National Defence Academy & Naval Academy (NDA & NA) Examination will be a two-step process where candidates first need to take the exam and then qualify the personality test or interview conducted by the Service Selection Board (SSB). The UPSC is solely responsible for issuing guidelines for selection and the final conduct of the entrance examination.

Education Qualification ​

Aspirants must have passed at least 12th Board exam to appear for NDA/NA examination. The detailed NDA education qualification required is highlighted below:

For Army Wing of NDA

12th Class passed of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent examination conducted by a State Education Board or a University.

For Air Force and Naval Wings of NDA & for the 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme at the Indian Naval Academy

12th Class pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent with Physics and Mathematics conducted by a State Education Board or a University.

NDA Exam Pattern

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) prescribes the exam pattern of NDA exam.  NDA selection process is divided into two stages-

  1. Written Examination
  2. SSB Interview

However, the Written Exam of NDA itself is divided into two parts i.e.

  • Paper 1 –  Mathematics
  • Paper 2 –  General Ability Test (GAT)

 Now, the General Ability Test (GAT) is further subdivided into two parts:

  • Part A – English Test
  • Part B – General Awareness or General Knowledge Test

NDA Selection Process Important pointers-

  1. All the questions in the NDA exam will be objective i.e., Multiple Choice Questions.
  2. The medium of the exam will be bilingual (English & Hindi) with a total of 900 marks.
  3. Total 270 questions are asked of which 120 questions are from Mathematics and 150 questions from GAT section.
  4. The NDA syllabus covered in the exam is 10+2 standards

NDA Marking Scheme

The UPSC formulates the NDA marking scheme. As per the scheme, no marks are deducted if a question is left unanswered but there is a provision of negative marking for wrong answers.
